Checkers / Draughts

Your guide to the best web sites for the game of checkers (or draughts) and its many variants.

ACF Checkers (American Checkers Federation)
Tutorials, openings, history, players, literature, events, news, announcements - you'll find it all here. A disorganized but valuable site.
Chinook
Chinook is the World Man-Machine Checkers Champion. It earned this title by competing in human tournaments, winning the right to play for the (human) world championship, and eventually defeating the best players in the world. Chinook was developed by a team of researchers led by Dr. Jonathan Schaeffer of the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Chinook is the by-product of a research effort started in 1989 into game-playing strategies. This project has had two goals: a short-range objective of developing a program capable of defeating the human World Champion in a match, and a long-term objective of solving the game of checkers, i.e. determining the game-theoretic value of checkers.
DamWeb
DamWeb can be translated as DraughtsWeb and is the most important information source on the internet concerning the game of international draughts. Currently only part of this Dutch site is translated into English, but it is still a valuable resource.
Jim Loy's Checkers Page
Many interesting articles, including openings, endings, and famous games.
Move Over
The complete text of an excellent book on draughts by Derek Oldbury, former World Champion, available online. It may also be downloaded in ZIP format.
